In honor of the encroaching holiday season, I’m going to be sharing gift guides on my blog each Friday until the end of the year. None of these posts are sponsored — these are all products that I own, use, and love! First up: tote bags!
I’m a sucker for a good tote bag. It started in college when I had more books to carry than my poor backpack could hold. I needed something cute and easy to carry my books around in, and canvas tote bags were the answer. I still use them today, sometimes for a purse if I don’t have much to carry or if I want to use it as a shopping bag. I have a few and all of them are book themed, so here are my recommendations for bookish tote bags!
Out of Print
Ah, my first bookish merchandise love. I genuinely love Out of Print. They rock. Everything is made well, so cute, and so bookish! I own a ton of things from them, so keep an eye out for more of their stuff on my lists. All of their tote bags are a heavy canvas material, with soft handles, and a pocket on the inside so your little things don’t get lost in tangle of a big bag. They are perfect for carrying books, but can carry about anything else you need to tote.
I bought my first tote from them last Christmas. I absolutely could not resist a punk portrait of Jane Austen. It was just beyond my limits of self-control, so I purchased the bag on the right, which is from the Punk Rock Author collection. It has famous portraits of authors in Punk fashions. Clockwise from the top left is Henry David Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Franz Kafka, Oscar Wilde, and Jane Austen. The second I got free with a Mother’s Day order. It’s the Hugh Thompson illustrated Pride and Prejudice cover, which is just stunning.
The totes run at $18, which is a good price for a nice, quality tote bag. They have everything from Shakespeare to A Clockwork Orange, so you’re bound to find the perfect gift for anyone on your list!

God, I really cannot gush enough about Obvious State. Honestly, I love every single thing they’ve ever made. They caught my attention with their Romantics collection, and I’ve been keeping my eye on them ever since. They are so classy and elegant. Their products are perfect for a refined reader — someone committed to the aesthetic and insists that everyone read the classics.
I will admit that I purchased neither of these bags. The Mary Shelley quote one was a birthday gift, and the Jane Austen one I actually won in an Instagram give-away. They’re a little heavier material than the Out of Print bags, but they also have the pocket on the inside, which is a total life saver for keys and phones. Their Romantics collection is simply beautiful, and I just like to look at them and drool. Their other stuff is great too, but the Romantic selections really take the cake for me.
Slip on over and check out their lovely collections!
